Annotation -
The origin and nature of the magnetic moment (classical vs quantum approach, free ion, solid state). Diamagnetism and paramagnetism. Interactions in magnetic systems. Magnetic ordering, magnetic structures. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Magnetization processes in ferromagnets, demagnetizing field. Permanent magnetic materials.

Syllabus -

1. Atomic susceptibility

Classical microscopic theory - Lorentz equations , Hamilton formalism , statistical averaging of the magnetic moment , Miss van Leeuwen theorem.

Quantum approach - the correspondence principle, spin , spin-orbit interaction. Free ion - electron configuration, terms, multiplets.

2. Diamagnetism, paramagnetism

Larmor diamagnetism, van Vleck's paramagnetism, Brillouin function. Curie law in solids. Pauli paramagnetism, diamagnetism of itinerant electrons.

3. Electron interactions, magnetic ordering

Dipolar interaction, exchange interactions, types of the exchange, crystal field. Magnetic structures. Spin waves, critical phenomena.

4. Ferromagnetism

Demagnetizing field, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, domain structure. Magnetization processes, hysteresis loop. Permanent magnetic materials .
