Methods of ion spectroscopy and vibrational spectroscopy - general principles and variants with emphasis on surface physics, thin films, catalysis and chemical physics. Theoretical background of the methods, instrumentation, applications in physics, chemistry and related fields, practical approaches to spectra analysis.

Syllabus -

Ion spectroscopy – interaction of ions with solid matter (electron and nuclear stopping power, penetration depth, sputtering yield, angular dependence, degree of ionization), classification of ion methods, SIMS, LEIS (ISS), RBS, evaluation of mass spectra, comparison of ion methods with other surface-related techniques.

Vibrational spectroscopy - basic physical concepts with a focus on linear optical methods (Raman and infrared spectroscopy), rotational -vibrational modes, molecular symmetry and its consequences, experimental setups, sample types and designs, spectrometer variants and their principles, interpretation of ro-vibrational infrared and Raman spectra, temporally and spatially resolved measurements, examples of specific experiments. Overview of modern surface-oriented vibrational spectroscopy and spectro-microscopy methods.

Gas sensors and their characterization – conductometric gas sensors.
