The aim is to make students familiar with statistical methods that are utilized in the atmospheric sciences, and
with their applications to specific climatological and meteorological tasks.

Basic mathematical concepts, basic statistical concepts and procedures (basics of probability calculus, random variables, empirical distributions, moments of distributions) and their application to climate and meteorological data

Tools and means for preliminary data analysis

Parametric distributions

Extremes, extreme value distributions

Correlation and regression

Statistical hypotheses testing

Analysis of variance

Time series, autoregression processes, Markov chains, stochastic weather generators

Introduction to multivariate statistical methods: multiple regression, principal component analysis, canonical correlation analysis, discriminant analysis, classification and cluster analysis
