The course gives an overview of main physical and chemical properties of natural water and the most common types of wastewater. The most important inorganic and organic compounds occurring in water are discussed individually. Students familiarise themselves with the water quality monitoring programmes and evaluation of their results. The end of course is devoted to drinking-water standards.

Physical and organoleptic properties of water, conductivity, radioactivity. Chemical properties of water - acidity and alkalinity, neutralisation capacities, hardness, total dissolved solids, chemical and biochemical oxygen demand. Review of inorganic components in natural water and the most common types of wastewater - their source, species, properties, fate in aquifer, common concentrations, methods of determination, limits of water standards. The most important organic components in water (humic substances, surfactants, oil and grease, phenols, aromatic and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides) - analogously to inorganic components. Influence of microorganisms on water quality. Water quality monitoring programmes, extent and frequency of analyses. Water quality evaluation and standardisation. Last update: DATEL (19.05.2005)
