Introduction: Rock-forming minerals and substances. Principal methods of laboratory investigation of rocks and their minerals.
Igneous petrology: Classification of igneous rocks (the IUGS system). Partial melting, magma ascent, crystallization and differentiation. Most important ultramafic, mafic and felsic rocks. Classification of igneous rocks (IUGS system). Petrochemical calculations. Origin and crystallization of magmas. Magmatic differentiation, assimilation, hybridization. Ultramafic rocks, composition of the upper mantle. Basaltic and gabbroic rocks; various types of basalts, MORB, ophiolites, layered basic complexes etc. Andesites and diorites. Acid volcanic and plutonic rocks. Granitoids and their role in evolution of continental crust. Metamorphic petrology: Basic terms of metamorphic petrology, the principal agents of metamorphism, minerals and mineral fabrics of metamorphic rocks, thermal gradient, metamorphic isogrades and metamorphic facies, classification and description of various metamorphic rocks and relationships between metamorphism and tectonics will be discussed.
