Annotation -
Didactics of Geology primarily focuses on the specific issues related to teaching geology. Students are introduced to current educational trends, didactic principles, teaching methods, and forms suitable for geological education. Another part of the course is dedicated to teacher preparation for lessons, which includes defining educational objectives, selecting content, its didactic transformation, and assessment methods. The final part of the instruction addresses the education of gifted students and students with special educational needs, student motivation for studying, and the popularization of geological sciences as a whole.

Syllabus -

Didactics of Geology primarily addresses specific issues related to teaching geology. Students become familiar with current educational trends, didactic principles, methods, and teaching forms suitable for geological education. Another portion of the course is dedicated to preparing teachers for lessons, encompassing the establishment of educational objectives, content selection, its didactic transformation, and assessment methods. The final section of the instruction deals with the education of gifted students and those with special educational needs, student motivation for studying, and the popularization of geological sciences as a whole.

Within the course, students will:

  • Practically master key teaching methods and organizational forms suitable for geological education, as well as specific geological topics.
  • Reflect on modern teaching trends and learn to apply them in practice, including the Framework for Teacher Digital Competence.
  • Characterize a constructivist approach to teaching with regard to students' understanding of the subject matter, and demonstrate the ability to work with students' experiences and misconceptions.
  • Construct a model teacher lesson plan.
  • Discuss the scope of the required geological curriculum.
  • Familiarize themselves with various forms of teaching assessment and learn to use them in practice.
  • Propose suitable methods to motivate the study of geological sciences.
