Annotation -
This course aims to introduce methods of collecting data from sample surveys to students of demography. Attention will be focused mainly on practical use in demographic practice, i.e. on the preparatory phase of the survey, the correct formulation of questions or scaling issues, as well as on the fieldwork process.

Requirements to the exam -

The course is granted credit for participation in classes, active participation in exercises and presenting a group task, which has two parts:

(1) create a report / presentation on the basis of the drawn sample survey

(2) then, using the selected questions used in this survey, conduct a survey and compare the results; presentation of the findings

Syllabus -

1) Introduction to social science research and sample surveys (basic concepts), quantitative and qualitative research strategies

2) Research ethics

3) Quantitative sample survey as a project (stages of research, operationalization, types of variables)

4) Sampling procedures, data collection techniques

5) Questionnaire design

4) Demographic sample surveys, available data sources for quantitative research - practical examples of specific research projects.

6) Processing sample survey data (data matrix, transformation of variables). Knowledge of basic statistical methods is assumed, in the course statistical procedures will be discussed in the context of working with individual survey data.

7) Presentation of assignments and discussion
