Annotation
This course invites undergraduate students of different study programs to explore contemporary issues in demography through a series of lectures and seminars presented by distinguished foreign lecturers. The course covers different demographic topics, emphasising, for instance, global population trends, migration, fertility, mortality, ageing, and public policy implications. The module elements have a combined format – in-person and online. The course awards 2 ECTS credits and is graded based on attendance and a final test.

Aims:

·      To expose students to global perspectives on contemporary demographic challenges.

·      To encourage critical thinking about the impact of population trends on society and policy.

·      To foster engagement with international experts in the field of demography.

The Institute for Futures Studies, Stockholm).

·      Thursday, 17 October, 17:20-18:55 VP – Dr Andreas Edel, Executive Secretary, Population Europe Secretariat, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock/Berlin on Population Europe – the amplifier of the voice of European demography (in presence).

·      Thursday, 31 October, 18:10-19:45 VP – (a) Roland Hosner, Flowminder Foundation, Dynamic Population Estimates for Low- and Middle-Income Countries based on Mobile Phone Data; (b) Dmytro Shuspanov, Institute for Demography and Life Quality Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev: Demographic Resilience: Building a Platform for Ukraine's Demographic Future during Post-War Reconstruction (lecture delivered within the WIC Online Colloquium, Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, Vienna).

The offer will be expanded during the semester according to the arrival of foreign guests to the department and offers from foreign institutions.

Entry requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, a basic understanding of demography, geography, sociology, or economics is beneficial. The course is a suitable complement to the elective course "Fundamentals of Demography".
