Annotation -
The objective of field course is to show and study the principal processes of a running water habitat (streams, brooks) as a quantitative investigation of benthic drift, chemistry and life with the hyporheic zone etc. Among investigated hypotheses, students will follow the diurnal migration cycle of bentos, patchiness of benthic organisms in respect to substrate type and stream velocity, etc.
The course is a common project of both Department of Ecology of Charles University Prague, and Department of Ecology of Palacky University Olomouc. It is intended namely for MSc. Students of ecology and limnology (hydrobiology) although other interested students are very welcome. The course will run once in two years (in exchange for Hydrobiological field course I. in the other year), however we are ready to run it yearly if there will be a sufficient number of applicants. Usually, the course takes 4-5 days at the very end of the academic year (i.e. early September). For further information, please, contact the responsible persons from Dept. Ecology, Palacky University Olomouc (Martin Rulik - rulik@prfholnt.upol.cz).

Syllabus - Czech

Praktikum bude realizováno jako projekt zkoumající vliv dnového substrátu, proudových a trofických podmínek na distribuci bentických bezobratlých. Projekt bude řešen v pěti vzájemně navazujících úlohách v v definovaném úseku toku Moravice v katastrálním území Karlova pod Pradědem (Jeseníky):

a) kvalitativní a kvantitativní analýza bentosu v odlišných typech substrátu
na vybraných ploškách subrátu (kámen, mechy, listový opad+detritus) budou bentometrem odebrány kvantitativní vzorky (Surberův sběrač), vyhodnocení denzity, druhové diverzity a funkčních trofických skupin

b) kvalitativní a kvantitativní analýza bentosu v závislosti na proudových podmínkách
měření rychlosti proudu v příčnýchch a hloubkových transektech, vyhodnocení habitatové a druhové diverzity a denzity bentontů

c) diurnální driftová aktivita bentontů
v intervalu den-noc kvantitativní odběr driftujících organismů (driftové sítě), vyhodnocení druhového spektra, abundance a biomasy migrujících jedinců, srovnání intenzity driftu v úseku s rybami a bez ryb

d) denzita predátorů (ryb) na lokalitě
v definovaném (uzavřeném) úseku odlov ryb elektroagregátem a sledování vlivu přítomnosti/absence rybích predátorů na intenzitu driftu

e) oživení hyporheických sedimentů a intersticiální vody
odběr hyporeických sedimentů freeze-core metodou a sledování struktury a denzity oživení, odběr intersticiální vody minipiezometry z různých hloubkových profilů a měření základních fyzikálně-chemických parametrů (teplota, rozpuštěný kyslík pH, konduktivita) - porovnání s povrchovou vodu v toku

Stálé studentské skupiny (4-5) se budou střídat při řešení jednotlivých úloh, každá skupina bude ale rovněž garantem jednoho úkolu, který zpracuje do protoků a výsledkové části

Časový harmonogram:

Den 1.: příjezd, ubytování, teoretická východiska praktika, nácvik technik měření a determinace základních skupin organismů, sledování noční části driftu

Den 2.: odběr vzorků bentosu, driftu (denní část), odlov ryb, vzorkování hyporheické zóny, noční část driftových pokusů

Den 3.: denní část driftu, vyhodnocování ?substrátových" a ?proudových" pokusů, práce na protokolech

Den 4.: vyhodnocení praktika, zápočet, ukončení a odjezd

Learning outcomes -

Upon completion of the practical course, the student will demonstrate:

  • A deep understanding of ecological processes in running waters (lotic ecosystems), particularly factors influencing spatial distribution (patch distribution) and the daily activity cycles of aquatic organisms.

  • The ability to theoretically describe the significance and dynamics of drift, the role of the hyporheic zone as a specific habitat, and the influence of both abiotic factors (current velocity, substrate type) and biotic interactions (e.g., fish predation) on the benthic community.

  • A comprehensive overview of functional feeding groups of invertebrates within the river ecosystem.

Skills

The student will master a wide range of hydrobiological methods in practice, including:

  • Quantitative sampling using Surber samplers and drift nets.

  • Advanced techniques such as freeze-core sediment sampling and the use of mini-piezometers.

  • Measurement and analysis: Independently measuring physico-chemical water parameters, identifying primary groups of organisms, and conducting density and species diversity analyses.

  • Data Management: Processing primary data, interpreting results within the context of tested hypotheses, and presenting findings in the form of a professional scientific report.

Competencies

The graduate is equipped to:

  • Work effectively in a team and take on the role of a lead researcher for specific project segments, including responsibility for data collection and subsequent evaluation.

  • Critically assess the relationship between theoretical concepts and real-world field conditions.

  • Design appropriate methodological approaches to solve hydrobiological research questions.

  • Handle both independent and collaborative research tasks in demanding field conditions thanks to the intensive nature of the course.
