Annotation -
This course is geared to provide you with the practical skills and knowledge required to management practices
used for nature conservation. The course will be held directly in the field and particular management tools will be
demonstrated (grazing, mowing, removal of shrubs, disturbance management, revitalization of watercourses and
small pools etc.) in various habitats typical for the Central European landscape. Target regions are Sedlčany and
Příbram region in Central bohemia. The course will be held during four days in September.

Syllabus -

Main stages of historical development of nature in Central Europe, important for identification of the current conservation priorities.

Current changes in the Central European landscape, identifying the context of negative phenomena.

Military areas as model systems useful for understanding of nature conservation.

Forests - changes in area, structure and quality. Management of forest habitats.

Wetlands - the main factors influencing their catastrophic decline and deterioration.

Management of wet meadows, revitalization of small water courses and reservoirs.

Steppe and forest steppe habitats - the causes of their loss and diversity decline. Management and restoration of steppe habitats.

Tools used in practical conservation - mowing meadows, creating light and structurally rich forests, grazing, burning, disturbance management.

Spontaneous succession vs. revitalization. Ecological restoration.

Monitoring and inventory.

Funding in nature conservation. Grants and how to treat them.

Learning outcomes -

After completing the course, the student:

  • interprets the current state of the Czech landscape in the context of the historical development of management and the main stages of the development of nature in Central Europe and explains the causes of current changes in biodiversity and landscape functions.
  • recognizes key types of biotopes typical of the Czech landscape (forests, wetlands, wet meadows, steppes and forest-steppes, anthropogenic habitats including sandpits and military areas) and analyzes their ecological status, threats and management needs directly in the field.
  • evaluates the impacts of management changes (intensification, abandonment of traditional management, land reclamation, afforestation, eutrophication) on endangered species, communities and landscape function.
  • proposes and justifies appropriate management measures for the protection of species and biotopes (mowing, grazing, removal of air raids, creation of light and structurally rich forests, disturbance management, revitalization of watercourses and reservoirs) with regard to ecological processes, target organisms and regional context.
  • compare active conservation and spontaneous succession approaches and critically evaluate their applicability in different types of habitats and conservation objectives, including the principles of ecological restoration.
  • understand basic methods of monitoring and inventorying organisms and biotopes and use their results to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation measures.
  • assess the effectiveness of spending financial resources in nature conservation, understand subsidy instruments and discuss the possibilities of their practical use in specific conservation projects.
  • integrate biological, ecological and economic aspects of nature conservation in formulating realistic and defensible proposals for practical interventions in the landscape.
