The course provides an introduction to a selection of topics in contemporary ecological research. It covers all major ecological disciplines including classical ecology, macroecology, and behavioural and evolutionary ecology. The particular lectures are given by an expert who is actively working in that particular field. Ecological processes are demonstrated on various taxa and ecological systems, and across different environments. Presented findings are based on a set of methodological approaches and form a comprehensive picture of contemporary ecology. Topics presented during the semester are listed in the syllabus. The first and second part of the course can be attended independently; lectures in summer and winter semester are not overlapping.

The student will prepare a short essay on one topic selected from those presented during the semester, based on recent scientific publications, which the student will look up in the bibliographic databases. It should contain references to the primary literature read by the student while preparing the thesis.

It will be assessed by the respective lecturer, and the student may afterwards discuss with him/her the strengths and shortcomings of the essay.
