Annotation -
The course provides a comprehensive introduction to the phenomenon of parasitic life in its broadest sense — from viruses and bacteria, through fungi and protists, to parasitic helminths and arthropods. The topic is approached from the perspectives of human and veterinary medicine, as well as from ecological (parasitism as a biological phenomenon and its role in interspecific relationships) and zoological viewpoints.
Emphasis is placed on the basic life cycles and strategies of parasitic pathogens, including parasite/pathogen–host and parasite/pathogen–vector interactions. The systematic part focuses on the most significant infectious agents responsible for human and animal diseases. The course also addresses major emerging infectious diseases in Europe and worldwide.
After introductory lectures explaining the phenomenon of parasitism and the origins of infectious diseases in general terms, the systematic section provides a taxonomic overview of infectious agents — viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasitic protozoa, parasitic helminths (flukes, tapeworms, nematodes) and arthropods (both as ectoparasites and as vectors of infectious diseases).
