The course gives basic information on special aspects of the physiology of aquatic organisms, particularly of animals. It is concerned primarily with principals and mechanisms of functions and their interactions. It deals with evolution of functions and their modifications correlated with mode of life of organisms in question.

1. Introduction -subject, relationship to other disciplines

2. Water, osmotic balance, maintenance of concentration gradients on biological membranes, channels and pumps, excretrion of salts, nitrogenous products of metabolism.

3. Energetical metabolism, role of respiration, its primary regulation, relationship between metabolic rate and sizeof oganisms in rest and activity, energetical cost cost of biomass synthesis, relationship to pO2, temperature relationships and their mechanisms (protein denaturation and fluidity of membranes), anaerobic metabolism, its types and anaerobic environments.

4. Body fluids, their circulation, geometry, Bernoulli´s theorem, respiratory pigments, their chracteristics and functions, Bohrś effect and Rootś effect, transport of carbon dioxide

5. Ventilation systems, tracheal systems, gills and lungs (divers), physical respiration in aquatic insects

6. Temperature - temperature budgets, rate relationships, heat exchangers, acclimation to high and low temperatures

7. Motion - molecular motors, cilia and flagella, amoeboid motion, skeletons, energetical efficiency of motion, buoyancy, swimbladder and its function

8. Photosynthesis, its two phases, photorespiration, ecxretion of photosynthetic products - relationship to bacteria and metal ions, system of carbon dioxide, limitation by CO2,

9. Senses, sensory receptors, mechanoreception, vision, electrocommunication, chemoreception, magnetoreception, - in long distance migration
