Annotation
Last update: Mgr. Jan Dobeš, Ph.D. (18.01.2024)
Functional Immunology is an advanced course that requires basic knowledge of immunology. This
course is suitable for master and PhD students. The course builds on the knowledge obtained when
studying the Master Immunology program (mainly in the courses MB150P14E, MB150P15A, MB150P13,
MB150P90E and MB151P132) and functionally connects the obtained knowledge demonstrating the
complexity of immune responses or how the immune system can be harnessed to treat cancer. Students
will also deepen their knowledge of cell and molecular biology or functional histology in the context of
the immune system.
Literature
Last update: Mgr. Jan Dobeš, Ph.D. (18.01.2024)

Given the nature of the course, it is highly recommended to attend all the lectures. PDFs of lecture
presentations will be provided after each lecture on a shared drive.

Requirements to the exam
Last update: Mgr. Jan Dobeš, Ph.D. (18.01.2024)

Study control will take place continuously during the whole semester in the form of short tests given at
the beginning of each lecture. Each test will retrospectively test the knowledge obtained during the
previous lecture. The test may contain different types of questions, e.g. multiple-choice, single-choice,
or free-response. It will be possible to obtain up to 5 points for each of the tests. Students need to
participate at least in 80% of lectures and tests (meaning that the top 8 results out of 10 tests are used
to calculate the final mark). The final grade will be determined as follows: excellent (“1”) = 40-36 points,
very good (“2”) = 35-32 points, good (“3”) = 32-29 points, failed (“4”) = bellow 28 points. The oral
examination will be applied in the case when the student will not meet the 80% participation criterion or
would like to improve the final grade.

Syllabus
Last update: Mgr. Jan Dobeš, Ph.D. (18.01.2024)

Each topic is covered by an expert in a particular field. The order of lectures might change.
1. Cell biology behind immunological processes (Jan Černý)
2. Histology behind immunological processes (Jan Černý)
3. Hematology: immune system development (Meritxell Alberich Jordà)
4. Hematooncology (Meritxell Alberich Jordà)
5. Central immune tolerance (Jan Dobeš)
6. Peripheral immune tolerance (Jan Dobeš)
7. Immune memory (Zdeněk Zadražil)
8. Ageing of the Immune system (Zdeněk Zadražil)

9. Immune responses orchestrated by non-immune cells (Jan Černý)

10. Rational design of immunotherapies (Jan Frič)

Entry requirements
Last update: Mgr. Jan Dobeš, Ph.D. (18.01.2024)

Functional Immunology is an advanced course that requires at least basic knowledge of immunology
(please see courses: MB150P14B or MB150P14E). This is essential for enrolling in this course. It is highly
advantageous if students also pass additional immunology-related courses prior to taking the Functional
Immunology course (eg. MB150P15A, MB150P13, MB150P90E, MB151P132). This course is suitable for
master and PhD students with at least basic knowledge of immunology.
