1. Introduction to plant mineral nutrition

History of plant mineral nutrition research, classification of mineral nutrients, general principles of uptake mechanisms, membrane transport

2. Uptake mechanisms of individual roots, transport within plant tissues

Uptake of mineral nutrients and water along the root axis, radial transport in roots, long-distance transport

3. Nitrogen

Uptake and assimilation in plant cell. Membrane transport systems, regulations of nitrogen uptake. Nitrogen assimilation, enzymes NR, NiR and GS. Interactions with other cell processes. Nitrogen and carbon balance. Effects of nitrogen availability. Nitrogen sources in ecosystems.

4. Phosphorus, sulphur

Phosphorus uptake. Functions of P in plant tissues. Role of phosphorus in energy transfer, regulatory role of inorganic phosphate. Metabolic and morphologic adaptations of plants to low phosphorus availability. Sulphate uptake and assimilation. Functions of sulphur in plants. Glutathione, phytochelatins.

5. Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium

Uptake mechanisms, regulations and cell compartmentation. Functions of individual ions in plants. Osmoregulation. Calcium as a second messenger.

6. Microelements and beneficial mineral elements

7. Factors influencing plant nutrient uptake. Ions interactions, effects of environmental factors. Deficiency and toxicity. Plant adaptations to adverse soil conditions. Disorders of plant nutrient uptake at alkaline, acidic or waterlogged soils.
