Annotation -
The subject presents – together with the courses of Theological antropology and Eschatology- a triptych in which is discovered the relation between God and creation in Jesus Christ, who is „the First and the Last - ho protos kai ho eschatos" (Rev 1,17). In this case the focus is given to the way in which through the act of „creation“in Christ God relates to „the world visible and invisible“ (Col 1,16): creation, cosmology, angelology, demonology.

Course assessment methods and requirements for successful completion, grading scheme -

The first part of the course, devoted to creation in general, will be the subject of an oral exam. The exam questions do not exceed the scope of the material listed in the syllabus. Questions:

  • Topics and perspectives of the theology of creation (Müller, pp. 156-172)
    The knowability of God as Creator and beings as creatures on the basis of Revelation and on the basis of natural reason (lectures; Constitution Dei Filius; Müller, pp. 212-213)
    Faith in creation in the Old Testament (Müller, pp. 173-178)
    Statements about creation in the New Testament (Müller, pp. 178-180)
    Formation of the doctrine of creation in the history of theology: in patristics and the early Middle Ages (Müller, pp. 181-193)
    Formation of the doctrine of creation in the history of theology: high scholasticism (Müller, pp. 193-204)
    The teaching of creation in the context of natural science in the modern worldview (Müller, pp. 206-209)
    Systematic interpretation of the theology of creation (Müller, pp. 213-224)
    Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a necessary prerequisite for creation (Pospíšil, pp. 41-100)
    Creation from nothing, the freedom of the Creator (Pospíšil, pp. 101-147)
    Perpetual creation (Pospíšil, pp. 148-196)

The second part of the course, devoted to angelology and demonology, will be examined in the form of a written paper. The student will prepare his own summary of two of the texts listed below, one concerning angels and the other demons. The length is exactly 4 pages without the title page. In addition to the form, the content and conciseness of the answers will be evaluated. Excerpts or simple points are not enough, a coherent text is required.

Syllabus -

1. About creation in general

A preliminary definition of the concept of creation. The doctrine of creation in history and a characterization of the place which protology now occupies in the whole of theology.

The knowability of God as Creator and of creatures as creatures on the basis of Revelation and on the basis of natural reason.

Creation as a trinitarian act in which the eternal exodus of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is reflected in the outward mission of the Persons.

The predestination of Jesus Christ and His role in creation, the primary purpose of the Incarnation and the primary purpose of creation, creation and the Covenant.

The creative act as a relationship between absolute Being and contingent existences: monism, dualism, analogia entis. Immanence and transcendence. Creatio ex nihilo. Being as gift. Relative autonomy of creation.

Creation as the temporal beginning of the world. Creatio continua. God's action through secondary causes. Evolution. Divine providence.
