The lecture offers an introduction to the canon of European literature and its development over the last 100 years. In several in-depth probes it creates an outline which allows the students to understand the transformations of poetics, themes and key genres of the 20th and 21st centuries and selected works of the most prominent authors.

The aim of the course is:
To deepen students' understanding of the history of world literature in the 20th and 21st centuries.
To encourage students to engage in independent reading by selecting six works for the World Classics.
To assess students' ability to formulate their own opinions on the literature of the period through the completion of a seminar paper.

Lecturing supported by PPT presentation, materials in Microsoft Teams course, part of the meeting always dedicated to joint reading of the text. At least once during the semester complemented by a visit to current theatrical productions related to the syllabus.

To fulfill the examination requirements, students must meet the following criteria: attend at least two-thirds of the seminars, submit a seminar paper (the assignment for which will be provided at the beginning of the course), expand their reading list to include five new works, and participate in a brief oral discussion based on the expanded reading list.

Strong command of Czech for fluent reading and discussion of modern texts. Desire to develop critical thinking skills as a reader. Basic knowledge of literary and historical contexts, or willingness to acquire it via self-study.

Requirements for gaining the credit:

1) active participation in two-thirds of the lessons

2) reading 6 texts from the list of literature, the reading of which will be tested by a brief oral examination

3) seminar work
