Course completion requirements -

The participants will pass an exam, consisting of a written and an oral part. Successful passing of the written part (translation of an unknown Latin text) is a condition for admission to the oral part (translation and interpretation of pre-prepared texts in the extent of 9,000 characters).

Requirements to the exam -

Requirements for the examination in Latin language:

The starting material for the examination is a corpus of texts of 9,000 characters, compiled by the PhD student and approved by the examiner. The corpus should include the following periods and genres: ancient (at least 900 characters), medieval (at least 900 characters), modern (at least 900 characters), theological text (at least 900 characters), biblical or liturgical text (at least 900 characters) and epigraphic tex (at least 900 characters). The corpus of selected texts shall be submitted for approval no later than two months after the beginning of the academic year in which the examination is scheduled.

The examination has two parts, written and oral:

a) the written part: translation of specified parts of the text; a printed dictionary (preferably Pražák - Novotný - Sedláček, see literature) or a grammar (preferably Quitt - Kucharský or Novotný, see ibid.) are permitted aids.

b) the oral part: in this part of the examination, the PhD student will demonstrate his ability to read and translate selected parts of the text (without a dictionary or a grammar) and to interpret their grammatical structure.
