This course introduces literary, historical, and theological topics related to the Letter to the Hebrews, focusing primarily on its main biblical-theological theme: The Priesthood of Christ.

Aim of the course

The goal of the course is to learn the basic rhetorical structure of Hebrews and to study how literary and rhetorical elements indicate a new conception of priesthood in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Requirements to the exam

Continuous study of subtopics according to the timetable set out in the study support and preparation of test questions. Finally, each participant will write an essay on a selected text from Hebrews (5 standard pages) using the exegesis and theological context discussed in the course.

5. Heb 1:4-2:18: Christ - Son of God and brother of men
6. Heb 3:1-5:10 Christ - High Priest worthy of faith and merciful
7 Heb 5:11-10:39: Christ - the High Priest of the New Covenant
8. Heb. 10:19-39: Believers share in Christ's one priesthood - faith, hope and love
9. The history of the Old Testament priesthood
10. The basic structure of the Israelite cult and the role of the priests in it

11. Comparison of the Old Testament concept of priesthood with the priesthood of Christ
