Basic teaching method for the course is a thorough discussion of mandatory texts in the class.

Requirements to the exam

Active participation (10 %)

Students are required do read the mandatory texts for each class and be prepared to answer questions related to it in the class. Repeated failures to answer questions in class will lower student’s score.

Political geography newsletter (15 %)

Each student shall present a political geography related newsletter. The student shall send one news article related to a current issue or conflict on Sunday before the Monday class.

In the class, the student shall have a brief, 7-10 minute presentation regarding the issue or conflict, analysing it from the perspective of political geography. Emphasize the role physical geography and try to connect the issue or the conflict with concepts from the class.

Use maps to illustrate your points.

 

Final paper (40 %)

Students shall write a short paper about the chosen text. The paper shall follow the structure of the presentation.   Minimum length: 12 600 characters with spaces (7 pages).

In the paper, focus on a specific issue, area or conflict and analyze it through the lens of political geography. You can use the same topic as for your newsletter.

The paper should have a clear focus as well as a key argument or thesis that you argue for.

The paper should also utilize available data, statistics as well as thematic maps to support your claims.

The paper should utilize concepts and theories discussed in class.

Please send the presentation paper via Turnitin teaching platform no later than 31th May 2025!
