The course will deal with security issues in Europe, North America, and the post-Soviet area. Emphasis will be put on new security threats, forms and reforms of international security cooperation, and challenges that states must face after the Cold War.

Requirements to the exam -

A) Research paper (cca 15 normalized pages) on one specific country and its approach to a specific type of threats. The research paper must have the following structure:

1) Short introduction
2) Review of the literature to the topic
3) Methodology and research question, i.e. what question does the paper answer and how
4) Data description, i.e. the steps defined in the methodology section
5) Discussion
6) Short conclusion

The topic can be discussed with the lecturer via email or personally in advance.
The structure will be addressed during the lecture shortly.
The paper must be handed in via email by 5 January. Later submission (by 12 January) will automatically mean lower grade. Papers submitted after 12 January will not be evaluated.

B) Written exam testing the overview of the compulsory reading. (During the examination period.)

Grading:

Research paper max. 60 points; exam max. 40 points. Grading according to the standard scale A-F used at the FSV UK.
