Přednáška si klade za cíl diskutovat klíčové problémy sociální teorie minulého století, a to formou komentované četby. Pro každý analyzovaný problém je jako výchozí vybrán jeden text, který uvádí do příslušného tematického okruhu. Systematická pozornost je věnována zejména způsobu, jakým sociální teorie reflektuje a analyzuje proměny současných společností - a jak se tyto proměny odrážejí v samotné výzkumné agendě sociálních věd. Kurs je pojat výrazně interdisciplinárně.
