The aim of the course is to discuss selected topic (and authors) of important post-war sociological theories. The syllabus is focused on the analysis of antinomical concepts of "action" and "structure" in modern sociological thinking and various attempts to solve this theoretical "dilemma". In this frame, the main attention will be paid to the scale of interpretations and forms of argumentations of production and reproduction of social order.

V základu tohoto kurzu je otázka: Jak můžeme jako sociální vědci nejlépe pochopit povahu sociálního dění a uspořádání společnosti? Mohou lidé řídit své jednání, podle své vůle rozhodovat o tom, co budou či nebudou dělat nebo jsou vědomky či nevědomky podřízeni sociálnímu prostředí, které určuje, co budou dělat. Jsou lidé ve svém jednání relativně autonomní nebo jsou k němu tlačeni sociálními silami. To jsou otázky debaty, která je označována jako debata o struktuře a jednání (anglicky structure a agency).

Cíle kurzu:

a) ukázat jeden ze základních problémů sociologického uvažování, který se nevyhne nikomu, kdo si začne klást hlubší otázky po povaze společenského dění; pochopitelně této otázce se lze vyhnout, lze ji ignorovat nebo ji ponechat otevřenou pokud provádíme jen popisné empirické výzkumy ať už názorů lidí na různé společenské otázky nebo jejich chování; v okamžiku, kdy se nesmíříme jen s popisy názorů a chování a chceme být analytičtí, zjišťovat socio-logiku, tak na problém jednání a struktury nutně narazíme;

b) představit některá významná řešení problému jednání a struktury, jejich silné a slabé stránky; proto je kurz nazván dilema jednání a struktury, protože "řešení" spočívá v příklonu k nějaké z již existujících alternativ

c) rád bych přispěl k tomu, aby se ze studentů stali dobří konceptuální nebo symboličtí analytici, kteří nepřistupují ke slovům, pojmům, definicím, označení existující ve společnosti naivně, prostoduše ale reflexivně, intelektuálně.
