Annotation -
The course is designed for doctoral students of the first and second year. It focuses on expanding and deepening knowledge about the strategies and conditions of basic research in the field of social sciences. It introduces doctoral students to the basic principles of scientific work in the current conditions of science and research in the Czech Republic. The course is organised as a systematic exposition of selected areas and will provide a comprehensive overview of the processes of creative scientific work in sociology. The lecturers have broad practical experience of doing research in sociology. Sources and literature for study will be recommended at each lecture separately.

Aim of the course -

The course aims to:
- to familiarise students with the objectives and contexts of contemporary sociological research;
- to deepen students' understanding of sociological concepts, programmes, projects and strategies;
- to develop skills in designing scientific projects or thematising social problems;
- to expand knowledge of programmes and conditions of European and international social research;
- expand students' abilities in argumentation, critical thinking, discussion and sociological imagination.

Course completion requirements -

Activities and assignments:

1. Active participation in seminars.
2. Writing an article or book review for a peer-reviewed social science journal. The paper must be published or at least accepted for peer review. The book review must be accepted for publication.
