The course is aimed at the students of all Master´s programs at the IPS who had not attended a course of English for Specific Purposes (political science, international relations, etc.) during their undergraduate studies.

The course will help you develop your knowledge and skills in all of the following areas:

reading and understanding a range of authentic academic texts

listening to lectures

writing a variety of assignments pertaining to your study field

participating in seminars and giving presentations

critical thinking and self-assessment

English learning and language development will be based on classroom discussion, debates, workshops, seminars and facilitated sessions. The teacher will frequently be in the role of facilitator but this task will also be assigned to students working in groups in the various sessions. There is a heavy emphasis on oral communication in this course.
Reading assignments will be given and the texts will be used as the basis of in-class discussion and debate, vocabulary work and grammar work.
Students will participate in a variety of learning methods in a mixture of dynamics - individual, pair work, working in larger groups, full class sessions.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

(i) 45%  - Final test (pass level: 65%).

(ii) 20%  - Timely submission of assignments (abstracts, structured summaries, self-assessments, peer-reviews, etc.).

(iii) 35% - Active participation in a group project (with the emphasis on academic presentation skills - debate, presentation)

(iv) Attendance (85%)

 

ASSESSMENT:

0-50 % = F 
51-60 % = E 
61-70 % = D 
71-80 % = C 
81-90 % = B
91% and more = A 

A - outstanding performance with only minor errors,

B - above the average standard but with some errors,

C - generally sound work with a number of notable errors,

D - fair but with significant shortcomings,

E - performance meets the minimum criteria,

F - fail – considerable further work is required

Selected chapters from Cambridge Academic English Advanced and Oxford EAP C1 will be used as a course supplement.
(Critical thinking, lectures and note-taking, language of group discussions, following writer’s argument, presentation practice, writing essays, etc.)
