The course is designed for students of sociology whose English is at intermediate level at least, i.e. B1-B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
Aim of the course -

The course aims to bridge the secondary school knowledge of the language and the needs of university students.
Students will acquire general academic vocabulary, key terms, notions and definitions for the covered topics, they will learn how to describe graphical presentation, and express their ideas and opinions in a debate.

Seminar in which content-based language learning methodology will be applied.

The method emphasises communication in the classroom, pair and group activities and student involvement in the learning process.

Students are responsible for downloading and printing the reading materials prior to the class.

To earn a credit (zapocet) students are required to pass a test.

Two tests will be taken during the semester, a mid-term (after five sessions)and an end-of-term ones. The students who either miss or fail one or both of these will have to take a complex test during the examination session.

To pass students must obtain at least 65 per cent out of the total.

The mid-term test - total of 36 points - examines the students' knowledge of usage of tenses (8 items in context, 0.5 point each)and also passive and nominal structures (transformations 2x4 sentemces per 1 point each); academic and key vocabulary for the covered topics including collocations, prepositional phrases and word fromation in context (in 4 exercises of 6 items each, item 0.5 point, total 12 points); definitions of basic concepts (3x1 point, fact and language are evaluated), students' ability to describe a graph (max 3 points, range of vocabulary, language accuracy and style are evaluated by max 1 point each), and lastly the ability to introduce briefly one of the covered topics or its part (in about 100 words, max 6 poits, evaluated are the knowledge of the area - 2 points, range of vocabulary - 2 points, accuracy and style - 2 points). Time 60 minutes.

The end-of-term test - total of 60 points - examines the students' knowledge of usage of tenses (8 items in context, 0.5 point each)and also tentative statements (transformations 4 sentemces per 1 point each)and connectives (4x1); academic and key vocabulary for the covered topics including collocations, prepositional phrases and word fromation in context (in 4 exercises of 6 items each, item 0.5 point, total 12 points); definitions of basic concepts (3x1 point, fact and language are evaluated), students' ability to describe a graph (max 3 points, range of vocabulary, language accuracy and style are evaluated by max 1 point each), students' ability to argue in writing about an opinion or fact (max 3 points, usage of discourse markers, language of argument, and accuracy and style are evaluated by max 1 point each), and lastly the ability to introduce briefly one of the covered topics or its part (in about 100 words, max 6 poits, evaluated are the knowledge of the area - 2 points, range of vocabulary - 2 points, accuracy and style - 2 points). Entry requirements

Intermediate level is required, ie. B1-B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Students must prove their knowledge by passing the enrolment test, which they are required to take the first week of the semester, another time is possible only in exceptional cases.

Enrolment test comprises two parts:

1) put the verbs in to their correct forms within the context of a newspaper article (20 items)

2) fill in missing grammatical words in sentences (10 items)

To pass candidates must obtain 60 per cent at least, ie.18 out of 30 points.

Cairncross: There?s a fashionable phrase around these days: ?Work-Life Balance?. Some people 1)feel they 2)have too much work 3)do, and so their lives outside the workplace 4)suffer.
