The seminar aims to acquaint students with communication and media studies methodologies (which are embedded within the social sciences and humanities traditions), by combining meetings that provide overviews of qualitative and qualitative methodologies, with more in-depth workshops that provide hands-on in-depth training with particular methods (also allowing to illustrate the more general workings of qualitative and qualitative methodologies). The last part of the seminar will focus on the research (e-)tools available to PhD students, and on referencing, research ethics and the avoidance of plagiarism.

In this group work, students will form small research teams and develop a small research project, starting with a research question and including a (brief) theoretical framework, methodological design, corpus definition, data gathering, data analysis, and reporting. The focus will be on the methodological design, and the corpus will be kept small to ensure feasibility. AI use and plagiarism rules (specifically related to the CEMES task): Students may use generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and similar, provided that the following conditions are met. Specifically, they may be used for the purposes of proofreading, translations or searching for sources. On the contrary, the prohibition of use strictly applies to the text creation, analysis or personal and sensitive data processing. Any use must be cited in the final output in accordance with academic rules. Generative AI tools will not be used to evaluate student outputs. Any violation of these rules will lead to a reduction in grade, failure to complete the course or disciplinary proceedings, depending on its severity. Only compliance with the aforementioned rules will guarantee the fulfilment of the educational objectives of the course, protect equal conditions for all students, and also ensure their privacy. The aforementioned potential sanctions also apply to any plagiarism. Plagiarism is the unacknowledged use of someone else’s work as your own, even if unintentional. It can involve copying text, paraphrasing without citing the source, undisclosed collaboration with others, or using AI. To avoid plagiarism, students must always properly cite their sources, mark quotations, and acknowledge contributions from others and AI. The responsibility always lies with the student—if you work with AI and plagiarism is found, it is considered your plagiarism. (AI is a language model that generates text for you from other texts.) To detect plagiarism, FSV UK uses Turnitin, which is automatically integrated into Moodle, and I also privately use Copyleaks. Both tools can identify plagiarism and AI-generated texts. ANNOTATION: The course aims to provide detailed information on qualitative and quantitative methods. And try out forms of media analysis within the Center for Media Studies (CEMES). The methodological seminar is a joint course for Czech and English Ph.D. programs. However, some sessions split into a Czech and an English part. There will be online joint seminars via Zoom with Dr. Ormrod and Dr. Sheets Thibault, and students must also complete analytical assignments in their classes. On top of that, to complete the course, it will still be necessary to prepare an analysis at the Center for Studies (CEMES).
ACADEMIC OUTPUTS: 1. First written assignment - how to prepare a questionnaire. The students will select a topic from a list and prepare 8 questions for the quantitative research and 8 questions for the qualitative research (both for the same topic). They will get feedback for it. The list of topics will be available at the November 7 session. 2. Second Assignment - it is linked to Introduction to Qualitative Methods (individual assignment), developing a research question based on the student's project proposals that can be answered through qualitative research methods and evaluation of the appropriateness of a qualitative research design for the students’ study (description of the method, proposed design & corpus). Students will receive evaluation and feedback from Robert Ormrod. 3. Assignment 2 is linked to the Introduction to Quantitative Methods (individual) session with Penny Thibault. 4. Final assignment: A group work that deals with a small research project, potentially linked to an existing research project or research center. In this group work, students will form small research teams and develop a small research project, starting with a research question and including a (brief) theoretical framework, methodological design, corpus definition, data gathering, data analysis, and reporting. The focus will be on the methodological design, and the corpus will be kept small to ensure feasibility—a Czech and English program group with Kateřina Turková and Irena Prázová.
