Annotation
We will introduce and discuss major issues related to globalization of media. We will look at important figures and their representative work, and analyze their arguments. We will explore various perspectives, including political, economic, technological, cultural and social. We will use examples of radio, television, film and new media. We will pay particular attention to distinguish various levels of communication (global, transnational, national, local). The course is fully in English.

Aim of the course

Students should acquire understanding of complex factors driving current and historical developments of the global media. They should be able to use this understanding for analysis of particular media organization and the context of their operation, as well as for linking it to relevant theories.

Course completion requirements

To pass the class, students need to get at least 51 points. They can get them for different little tasks throughout the semester (voluntary), book review (voluntary) and a final paper (obligatory). Requirements for the tasks will be discussed during the first class.

20 %   Seven small tasks (7x 2-3 pages - voluntary) for the first seven weeks, explained in the syllabus.

20 %   Book review (1+ pages - voluntary) of a book from our reading list or any other book approved by me that is related to our class.

100 %   Final paper (6+ pages - obligatory) covering some issue discussed in the class or directly related to it. Students should use a coherent system of referencing and use (and quote) several academic books, articles or other publications. The papers will be graded on the presence and quality of a discernible argument, overall structure, formal aspects (including proper citation of sources) and relevance to the course topics.

Final grade spectrum: A: 91-100, B: 81-90, C: 71-80, D: 61-70, E: 51-60, Fail: <50
