Aim of the course

The aim of this course is to introduce the approach of critical theory, specifically the political economy of communication, in the field of the media and communication studies. After graduating from the course, students will be able to recognize the approach/arguments of political economy of communication and apply this perspective to various topics from the field of communication studies, including gender media studies and digital media/communication and social network sites.

Evaluation of the students’ performance will be based on oral examination - a brief interview with the lecturer(s). Studying materials: readings and discussions in the class and additional list of literature – see List of literature.

The factual correctness of the answers will be evaluated, as well as argumentation, critical and independent thinking demonstrated in the answers.

Form of the class meetings: Active students' involvement in the discussions (moderated by the lecturer) based on a detailed knowledge of the texts disseminated by the lecturer; short introductory lectures.
