Annotation -
This course introduces students to the fundamental methods used in chemical laboratories. Students will learn the functions and proper use of basic laboratory equipment, as well as modern procedures in the synthesis—primarily of organic compounds—together with methods of separation, purification, and characterization of substances.

Chemical Laboratory Techniques – Course Description and Learning Outcomes

Prerequisites / Background
The course builds on knowledge and skills from General & Bioinorganic Chemistry and General Organic Chemistry, especially competence in chemical calculations and understanding of organic and inorganic reactivity.

Course description
Upon completion, students will know and comply with laboratory safety rules, be able to provide first aid for the most common laboratory accidents, perform basic laboratory calculations, work with standard laboratory equipment, carry out fundamental laboratory techniques and simple syntheses, keep proper laboratory records, and appropriately characterize compounds.

Learning outcomes — students will be able to:

  • Know and follow safety regulations in the chemical laboratory.

  • Apply first-aid procedures in the laboratory when needed.

  • Use correct terminology for laboratory equipment.

  • Perform basic lab skills (weighing, volumetric measurement, pipetting, glassware washing, etc.).

  • Prepare solutions to specification, selecting the appropriate formula(e) and calculating required quantities.

  • Understand and perform core laboratory methods: various crystallizations, extractions, distillation, sublimation, decantation, and TLC.

  • Synthesize simple compounds.

  • Characterize both solid and liquid compounds.

  • Maintain complete laboratory notebooks/records.
