The aim of the course is to introduce to students the current trends in environmental analysis in terms of detection and analytical techniques, especially from the point of view of contaminants which influence the environment in the last years and are most up-to-date. These include, in particular, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, drug residues and antibiotics, phthalates, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons (PCBs) which, due to their persistence, are still a current and broad range of pesticide and insecticide compounds. The aim of the subject is also to clarify the concepts of bioaccumulation, persistence, bioremediation, phytoremediation and their relationship to contaminants in the environment and the food chain. Part of the subject is knowledge of legislation in environmental analysis, modern trends in sample preparation for detection of trace contaminant levels and an overview of analytical methods for environmental protection. An overview of the green (environmentally friendly) analytical chemistry methods and ten green chemistry rules will also be part of the subject.
