Annotation -
Medical microbiology follows the basic subject Microbiology. This subject expands knowledge about medically important microbes and microbial infections focusing on routine laboratory and clinical diagnosis of infections, clinical forms and pathogenesis of infectious diseases, and their therapeutical management. The goal is to prepare the skilled worker for microbiology laboratory including basic procedures, techniques and evaluation of results.

Course completion requirements -

Credit conditions:

  • 100% attendance in laboratory practice (no absence without leave).
  • Attendance at excursion to ÚKM FNHK - according to actual situation.
  • Worked out protocol from each lecture with average classicification not worse than 2.0 and handed in not later than given date.
  • Succesfull identification of unknown microbiological sample.
  • Successfully passed credit test.

Exam conditions:

  • Gained credit.
  • Successfully passed exam test (25 questions).
  • Successfully passed oral exam.

  • Methods of specimen collection, transport of biological material, inoculation on different media, laboratory protocols.
  • Cultivation media, cultivation of bacteria.
  • Laboratory diagnostics of gram-negative bacilli.
  • Laboratory diagnostics of gram-positive cocci.
  • Haemocultivation, controls of sterility.
  • Laboratory diagnostics of fastidious pathogens.
  • Laboratory diagnostics gram-positive bacilli.
  • Laboratory diagnostics of acid-fast bacilli.
  • Laboratory diagnostics of parasitic diseases.
  • Laboratory diagnostics of viral infections.
  • Laboratory diagnostics in mycological laboratory.
  • Making use of indirect laboratory methods in infection diseases diagnostics - serological tests and direct antigen testing.
