Annotation -
The course Dosage forms II directly follows the course Dosage forms I. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the manufacture of technologically demanding dosage forms, advanced dosage forms, and drug delivery systems with modified drug release. The course focuses on excipients used in advanced dosage forms and drug delivery systems, their formulation and stabilization, and methods for evaluating the quality of advanced dosage forms and drug delivery systems.

Course completion requirements -

The examination in this core pharmaceutical discipline is written and covers topics from Dosage Forms I and Dosage form II.  The examination test consists of questions with one correct answer. Each test contains 60 questions, and students have 75 minutes to complete it. To pass the examination, students must achieve at least 70% correct answers (42 points).

A second retake of the exam (following a repeated enrollment) is conducted in a combined format before a committee of at least two members. This exam always consists of a written test followed immediately by an oral component.

Learning outcomes

Summarize the biopharmaceutical aspects of oral, ocular, dermal, transdermal, parenteral, and inhalation drug administration.

List the types of parenteral preparations according to the Pharmacopoeia. Specify the requirements for parenteral products and analyze their significance in practice.

List the types of inhalation dosage forms according to the Pharmacopoeia. Compare the properties, advantages, disadvantages, and applications of the different types of inhalation dosage forms.

Classify generations of dosage forms according to the type of drug release. Analyze the differences between immediate release and modified release of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of modified drug release and deduce their practical impact. Summarize the types of modified drug release. Compare immediate, prolonged, delayed, and pulsatile drug release. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of dosage forms with prolonged drug release and deduce their practical impact. Analyze the differences between modified drug release and targeted drug delivery.

Classify matrix systems according to the nature of the matrix used. Characterize hydrophilic, lipophilic, insoluble, and mixed matrix systems. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of matrix systems and deduce their practical impact. Classify membrane systems according to the mechanism of drug release. Classify membrane systems according to the type of membrane used. Discuss the differences between membrane-controlled systems and osmotic-controlled systems. Discuss the differences between matrix and membrane (reservoir) systems with controlled drug release.

Characterize transdermal preparations. Discuss the types of dosage forms used for transdermal drug administration. Compare dermal and transdermal preparations. Describe the difference between reservoir and matrix-type transdermal patches. Explain the mechanism of drug release from transdermal patches.

Characterize multiple-unit dosage forms. Discuss the differences between single-unit and multiple-unit dosage forms. Characterize particulate systems and classify them according to particle size. Analyze the reasons for using particulate systems. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of using particulate systems. Discuss the differences between microparticles and nanoparticles.
