Annotation -
The course Pharmaceutical Technology II (PhT II) is a direct continuation of the courses Methods of Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmaceutical Technology I. Its objective is to acquaint students with the production of modern dosage forms and drug delivery systems with modified drug release. Furthermore, the course focuses on excipients used in advanced drug delivery systems, formulation and stabilization procedures, and methods for assessing the quality of modern dosage forms and delivery systems. The practical training is designed to familiarize students with industrial manufacturing processes of solid dosage forms and their evaluation. The seminar component aims to expand students’ knowledge in the field of extemporaneous preparation of pharmaceutical products, including the preparation of sterile dosage forms.

Course completion requirements -

The course Pharmaceutical Technology II is concluded with a credit and a commission examination. The requirements for obtaining the credit are as follows:

·         Completion of practical training and seminars in the scope prescribed by the study plan. Full (100%) attendance at both practical training and seminars is mandatory.

·         Proper maintenance of laboratory reports from practical training.

·         Achieving a minimum of 75% of the total points in individual tests.

The final examination is conducted before a committee and covers topics from both Pharmaceutical Technology I and Pharmaceutical Technology II. A thorough knowledge of the course Methods of Pharmaceutical Technology is also essential for successful completion of the examination.

Summarize the biopharmaceutical aspects of oral, ocular, dermal, transdermal, parenteral, and inhalation drug administration.

List the types of parenteral preparations according to the Pharmacopoeia. Specify the requirements for parenteral products and analyze their significance in practice.

List the types of inhalation dosage forms according to the Pharmacopoeia. Compare the properties, advantages, disadvantages, and applications of the different types of inhalation dosage forms.

Classify generations of dosage forms according to the type of drug release. Analyze the differences between immediate release and modified release of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of modified drug release and deduce their practical impact. Summarize the types of modified drug release. Compare immediate, prolonged, delayed, and pulsatile drug release. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of dosage forms with prolonged drug release and deduce their practical impact. Analyze the differences between modified drug release and targeted drug delivery.

Classify matrix systems according to the nature of the matrix used. Characterize hydrophilic, lipophilic, insoluble, and mixed matrix systems. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of matrix systems and deduce their practical impact. Classify membrane systems according to the mechanism of drug release. Classify membrane systems according to the type of membrane used. Discuss the differences between membrane-controlled systems and osmotic-controlled systems. Discuss the differences between matrix and membrane (reservoir) systems with controlled drug release.
