Annotation
Students are introduced into the problems dealing with the environmental pollution. The discussion is focused on the contamination of food, toxic effects of drugs, addiction and poisons in the plant kingdom.

Syllabus

Lecturers:

Lectures:

  1. Introduction to subject. Toxic effects. Mechanism of action. Absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of toxic agents, their interactions.
  2. Toxic exposures from environmental and occupational setting (hydrocarbons and their derivatives, toxic metals). Effects of selected organic and inorganic compounds.
  3. Alcohols (methanol, ethanol, glycols), drugs of abuse (stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens). Mechanisms of their action, risk to health.
  4. Introduction to toxicology of plants, mushrooms and animals. Selected alkaloids, terpenes, saponines, risk to health.
  5. Food additives (antioxidants, emulsifiers, sweeteners, preservatives, stabilizers, colourings, flavours, acidity regulators, bulking and anti-caking agents). Credit test.
