Annotation -
Mastering the subject of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry is a difficult task. At the beginning of their studies, medical students often do not realize the importance of the connection between basic sciences and clinical problems. This e-course will use selected case studies to illustrate the relationship between clinical situations and the basic biochemical principles of human body functioning. The aim of the course is to support the teaching of biochemistry and encourage students to develop the ability to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies in their future medical practice.

Syllabus -

Structure: Interactive e-learning case studies (12 case studies)

Each case study is designed as a medical puzzle that simulates real-world primary care practice (general practitioner, pediatrician, emergency department).

First contact with the patient: Analysis of the medical history and description of symptoms captured by the physician during the initial examination.
Working with professional terminology: Looking up unfamiliar terms (e.g., tachycardia, polydipsia) using the accompanying Glossary of Terms or through independent research.
Establishing a preliminary diagnosis: The student enters their suspected condition (e.g., pneumonia) into the system.
Additional examinations: After entering the diagnosis, the next phase unlocks, providing results from laboratory, biochemical, or imaging methods that lead to the correct resolution of the case.

Course Objectives

Bridge theory and practice: Demonstrate biochemical processes directly through examples of real-world patients.
Develop clinical reasoning: Teach students to integrate knowledge from biochemistry, physiology, pathophysiology, molecular genetics, and pharmacology.
Support active learning: Utilize the principles of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) for more effective information retention.
