Annotation -
Reading and grammatical-lexical analysis of texts with a professional focus. Exercises focus on the systematic consolidation of Czech grammar and vocabulary, as well as on the development of communicative competences within the C1 level of the CEFR. Conversation deepens skills in communication with patients and medical staff. Presentations focus on the ability to create effective presentations on professional topics and to speak in front of an audience.

Topics: current popular science and academic articles on healthcare issues; application/letter of request; CV.

Grammar: declension of borrowed nouns; adjective suffixes; verbal prefixes; verbal passive; imperative focused on giving instructions to patients; conjunctions and linking expressions.

Presentations: presentation structure; specifics of professional/disciplinary presentations; effective (linguistic and nonverbal) elements; how to deliver a presentation.

Learning outcomes -

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • read, analyze, and summarize current popular science and academic articles on health/medical topics, and discuss their content; 

  • independently formulate a request/application in administrative and academic contexts (e.g., for an internship, grant, or conference participation), with emphasis on linguistic accuracy and appropriate register; 

  • write a structured professional curriculum vitae (CV) in line with Czech standards; 

  • use correctly and decline (inflect) borrowed nouns in healthcare contexts; 

  • form and use adjectives via the appropriate suffixes and recognize their stylistic nuances; 

  • understand the semantic nuances of verbal prefixes and, by extension, the meanings of verbs derived from them; 

  • actively use the verbal passive in professional and administrative styles; 

  • use imperative constructions to give clear and appropriate instructions to patients and healthcare staff; 

  • effectively employ a wide range of conjunctions and linking expressions to produce coherent, well-argued spoken and written discourse; 

  • formulate a professional opinion, defend it in expert discussion, and respond appropriately to counterpart’s arguments; 

  • prepare and deliver a professional presentation: choose an appropriate structure, apply the features of professional/academic style, use effective linguistic and nonverbal elements, and present the content clearly and persuasively.
