Annotation -
The subject of Pathology, as part of the preclinical curriculum and medical complement, introduces students to the morphology and principles of human diseases. At the theoretical level, teaching is provided through lectures. In the winter semester, these are devoted primarily to the general principles of disease; in its final weeks and subsequently in the summer semester, the focus shifts to special pathology, including both non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases. Practical classes are conducted in the microscopy classroom, which also contains macroscopic specimens demonstrating selected diseases. The aim of the practicals is to acquire basic skills in morphological examination of the patient, both macroscopic and microscopic, which are applicable across medical disciplines.

Aim of the course -

Students should master the basic principles of human diseases and become familiar with the principles and morphological appearances of individual diseases. Furthermore, they should learn the proper principles of sampling, fixation, labeling, and submission of material for biopsy examination and, in the future, be able to understand a histopathological finding in a biopsy report. Another aim of teaching pathology is to understand the discipline itself and the essential role of the pathologist as a key member of the interdisciplinary team, closely connected with most surgical disciplines and with oncology

Course completion requirements -

Winter semester credit: physical presence at the practicals.

Summer semester credit: physical presence at the practicals + practical microscopy exam at the end of semester (you cannot sign for oral exam without the credit).

1. Practical microscopy exam
This precedes the main examination and is part of the criteria for awarding the credit for the summer semester. The score achieved in the practical exam also contributes to the overall assessment of the oral exam.

Requirements of the practical microscopy exam:

  • Evaluation of 1 microscopic slide: determine localization, establish a diagnosis, optionally offer a relevant differential diagnostic consideration, and answer additional questions from the examiner.
  • Maximum score: 5 points

 2. Oral examination (in person)
Consists of three questions: General Pathology, Special Pathology, and Oncologic Pathology.

Grading of the oral exam:
The total score includes the points earned from the practical microscopy exam (0–5 points), plus points for answering the three oral exam questions (3 questions, each graded 0–10 points).
