Aim of the course -

The aim of internal medicine is to gain and adopt knowledge and practical skills essential for further studies of internal medicine. It includes mainly:

  1. Correct and systematic taking of complete history.

  2. To learn and practice physical examination of all regions, organs and systems and master physiological and also basal pathological findings.

  3. To become familiar with basics of methods of examination in internal medicine and its subspecialties (laboratory examination, ECG, imaging techniques etc.). To become familiar with their principles, basic indications, information provided by them, normal findings and basic pathological findings. Integral part is also knowledge of preparation of patients for particular examination procedures, basic indications and contraindications.

Education takes place in the form of mandatory seminars and clinical training.

Seminars.  Eight seminars covering propaedeutic of internal medicine and its basic subspecialties will take place. Attendance, which is mandatory, will be registered by teachers in attendance sheets that will be distributed to students during the first seminar

Clinical training will take place at clinical wards of the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd Department of Medicine. Students will be distributed to particular wards and teachers during first day of clinical classes. The aim of clinical classes is to learn and practice history taking and physical examination of patients. Second aim will be also to learn basics of laboratory, imaging and other methods used in internal medicine with the stress on their principles, basic indications and contraindications, basal findings and preparation of patients. Attendance will be registered by teachers (stamp and signature) in attendance sheets that will be distributed to students during the first class.

Essential condition for clinical training is having white coat, stethoscope, ID batch, overshoes and vaccination against hepatitis B.

Students are requested not to attend clinical training when having signs and symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. Substitute practice is possible based on deal with a teacher.

Condition of credit is at least 80% attendance in internships, writing a case report with a complete history, physical examination, and an indicative proposal for further testing. At the same time, students will demonstrate the ability of physical examination.
 
The exam consists of a written test - a multiple choice (min. 66% correct answers) and a practical test at bedside focusing on the history and physical examination. Student will draw two out of 15 areas (see Annex).
 
Condition to examination is a credit for the winter semester and passing tests in the 2nd year (Structure and Function).
 
Tests and exams are organized by Department of Internal Medicine.

Conditions for participation in internships and seminars: Student has no evidence of  infectious diseases such as respiratory or intestinal infections. Vaccination against hepatitis B. White coat, badge, hospital shoes, stethoscope.
