Annotation
Pharmacology of particular classes of drugs is taught in corresponding problem-based courses in the Module IIC in the summer semester of the 3rd section of study and in both semesters of the 4th section of study. There are 39 hours of seminars and practicals in 4 courses in the winter semester and 45 hours of seminars and practicals in 12 courses in summer semesters. In 7 courses students solve case studies with the use of electronic drug databases (e.g. Micromedex), the Internet and other aids (e.g. drug reference books). Results of solving of case studies are later discussed with the lecturer. Students also practice precription writing and write tests.

Aims of the subject The aim of pharmacology teaching is to learn students to select a convenient drug for a particular clinical problem with respect to pharmacological properties of the drug (e.g. its mechanism of action, adverse effects, kinetics, interactions, cost). Methods of teaching Teaching of pharmacology in the courses of the Module IIC takes place mostly in a practical room of Department of Pharmacology. Requirements for examination A condition for obtaining a credit from pharmacology in the Module IIC is to meet criteria of five tests (analgesics, antibiotics, psychopharmacology, drugs used in disorders of gastro-intestinal system, drugs used in disorders of cardiovascular system) + at least 80% attendance of practicals. To pass any of the tests the student must gain at least 32 points of 40 possible (80% success)in each test. The credit is a condition for registration for the examination from pharmacology. The examination consists of practical and theoretical part. During the practical part students are required to solve a pharmacological problem in a selected case study and to prescribe a drug. In the theoretical part of the examination students select randomly one pharmacological topic and four drug names from a list given at http://old.lf3.cuni.cz/farmakologie/topics.html. They then report (orally) on the selected topics and drugs, answer additional questions (ad hoc) and discuss pharmacology with the examiner. Students should first of all understand well mechanisms of actions of drugs in question and should have an excellent orientation in important drugs.
