The cell biology course consists of lectures and seminars for the 1st-year general medicine students. The two-hour lectures will be given during the last 4 study weeks in the winter semester (12th-15th study week) and the 3 two-hour seminars will take place during the 13th, 14th and 15th week of the winter semester. The aim of the course is to provide the students with an overview of the cell structure and organisation, cell organelles, genetic information and its expression, intracellular transport, intercellular communication, cell cycle, cell signalisation and differentiation. One part of the subject covers the methods of cell biology with an emphasis on microscopy techniques. The level of the subject is adapted for the 1st-year students of medicine. Students will obtain a syllabus and list of literature. Passing the final written test with a sufficient score will be required for obtaining the credit with marks. Regular participation to the lectures is recommended; participation to the seminars is absolutely necessary.

Requirements to the exam -
Last update: ELL00480 (08.09.2009)

Conditions of obtaining credit with marks (CE) in Cell Biology (81306) for the students of General Medicine:

1) Participation in all (three) seminars. Those who missed a seminar (for an excusable reason) may, with permission of the teacher, attend it later during the same week by joining another group.

2) Students should pass a written test during the examination season. The test includes questions on the material of the lectures and seminars, which may be also found in the syllabus on cell biology. The test contains 20 questions, each with 3 variants of answer, among which the correct one should be selected. Students have to answer correctly 75% of questions in order to obtain the required number of points (1 point = 1 correct answer; 19-20 points will be required for the mark ?excellent?; 17-18 points for ?very good?; 15-16 points for ?good?, 14 and less points will be evaluated as unsatisfactory)

3) Students write the test according to the group schedule. There is no need to sign for individual test terms. Students who, for some excusable reason, cannot attend the test should report as soon as possible by e-mail (jcmar@lf1.cuni.cz), or by phone (224 968 006). After obtaining permission, they may write the test at the nearest term on the schedule.

4) In case of the failure, students will have two further terms for repeating the test. Except these, there will be no other terms. According to the paragraph 9 article 12 of the Study and Examination Regulations, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, the right for repeating the test does not imply the option of choosing any additional term.
