Annotation -
The aim of the course is to consolidate, deepen, and practice key grammatical phenomena necessary for communication in German and for reading texts. The course also includes raising awareness of the similarities and differences between the grammatical structures of German and Czech. Students will learn to search for information independently, make use of available resources, and further develop their language knowledge.

Workload: 1x2 hours per week, i.e., 26 hours of classroom teaching per semester + approx. 25 hours of self-study

Aim of the course -
  • Students become aware of the connection between the speech act and a particular grammatical structure
  • Students will master speech acts such as narrating, describing processes, expressing conditions, stating goals and objectives, formulating hypotheses, reasoning, forms of politeness
  • Students will be able to independently acquire linguistic structures
  • Students will be able to recognise commonalities and differences in the structures of different languages

Course completion requirements -

The outcomes of the course are the appointed credit points. To pass successfully it is necessary to be actively present at the seminars, and prepare for the seminars throughout the whole semester. At the end of the semester there will be a final credit test based on the materials from the course.

Learning outcomes -

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

Language Skills

  • know and actively use grammatical phenomena at levels B1–B2 (sentence structure, temporal relations, verb tenses, logical connectors, verb valency, passive voice, subjunctive, infinitive constructions, nominal groups, deictic elements);

  • connect grammatical structures with specific speech acts (narration, describing processes, expressing conditions, formulating goals and intentions, formulating hypotheses, argumentation, forms of politeness).

Subject-related Competences

  • reflect on similarities and differences between the grammatical structures of German and Czech;

  • independently acquire new grammatical features and expand their knowledge using appropriate resources.

Metacompetences

  • apply strategies for independent learning and for the long-term consolidation of language skills;

  • transfer the acquired skills to working with other foreign languages as well.
