Annotation -
The course is focused on reading of German academic texts. It requires B1/B2 level of German language with appropriate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Its objective is the improvement of reading skills. Speaking or writing in German is not required but the course is held mainly (but not only) in Czech, which is why this course requires a C2 level in Czech and is not recommended for foreign students.

While the course is one of the options for fulfilling the Foreign Language II requirement, it is also open to any student wishing to improve their comprehension of academic texts. This is a one-semester course, 1 x 2 lessons per week, with a significant amount of homework, i.e. 26 hours of classroom time per semester plus approximately 75 hours of self-study.

Aim of the course -

  • Students will be familiar with the typical linguistic structures of academic texts in German.

  • Students will be able to use strategies to navigate through a text, to select key information and to find answers to their own questions.

  • Students will be able to independently search for academic texts related to their field of study.

  • Students will also expand their academic vocabulary when working with a text from their own subject.

Course completion requirements -

Attestation is awarded on the basis of regular attendance at class, completion of assignments, active participation in the course, and a final test/final consultation.

Evaluation: 70% course work, 30% final test/final consultation.

Entry requirements -

German at a minimum level of B1, the level will be tested by a diagnostic lexical-grammatical test at the beginning of the course.

Knowledge of Czech at a minimum level of C1.
