Annotation -
The course will be taught in-class in summer semester 2022.

This is a one-semester course, 2x2 lessons per week.

The course is intended for students at B1+ level of English.
The objective of the course is to develop grammatical competence in students, to acquire academic vocabulary, and to enhance all four language skills with regard to the needs of of university students.
The objective is also to prepare students for the B2 exam - practising exam type of questions and tasks, essay writing and general exam skills.
The leaving level of English in this course is B2, which corresponds to the tested level of the Foreign Language Exam of the Faculty of Arts.

Course completion requirements -

Students will obtain 3 credit points for the course if they fulfill the following requirements.

  • attendance -  online conference lessons 
  • completion of all tasks assigned by the teacher as compulsory in Moodle or other online platform
  • submission of min. 1 essay (preparation for the Writing part of the B2 exam)
  • passing the credit test at the end of the term (min. 60% of correct answers)

Syllabus -

The course is structured around the units 1 - 8 of the textbook Complete IELTS Bands 5-6. Additional materials are taken from other textbooks focusing on IELTS (or FCE) preparation, grammar and vocabulary practice, and original texts in English. Students will practice all four language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Overview of grammatical and lexical units

Grammar: comparative, countable and uncountable nouns, present simple, present perfect simple and continuous, past tense, articles, the passive, relative pronouns, conditionals, time conjunctions.

Vocabulary: comparing the meanings of similar words, word formation; study-related vocabulary, the internet, global problems, economy, technology, money, environment, relationships or fashion and design; basic vocabulary related to the field of study.

Writing: essay structure, types of essays - argumentative, expository.

Reading: preparation for the types of tasks in the B2 exam. 

Listening: preparation for the B2 exam

Speaking: preperation for the B2 exam; giving a presentation
