The course introduces students in a demonstrative-experiential way (by direct participation or observation) to various techniques and methods of evidence-based psychological approaches in their use across a spectrum of application contexts, i.e. in psychotherapy, counselling, psychosocial training, personal development, coaching, mediation, mentoring, soft skills training, communication training, etc. The course explains the differences in the professional qualification training for the practice of the disciplines at a professional level, explains to the students the requirements of professional studies in training, the structure of studies, the course also introduces the institutions sponsoring the training and the interest/professional associations and institutes organizing postgraduate education and training for the field of psychotherapy, counselling, coaching, etc. |

The Psychotherapeutic and Developmental Methods and Techniques 1 course will provide students with a structured introduction to the classification of psychological methods and techniques used across the spectrum of helping professions in clinical and non-clinical contexts, in the professions of psychotherapy, psychological counselling, family, couple/peer therapy, team and work group development, coaching, etc.
Students will have the opportunity to discuss their own professional beliefs and their personal dispositions for future career choices, in the selection of therapeutic or coaching training with respect to their own career orientation, needs and professional growth, and philosophical beliefs about the person and their social environment and the objective/constructive nature of reality.
Through examples, students will learn about a variety of psychological methods and techniques applied in different contexts of professional psychological work across sectors. Methods and techniques from the following psychological approaches/concepts will be demonstrated for students: systemic therapy and coaching, family therapy, solution-focused therapy and coaching (SFT, SFC, SFBT), transactional analysis (TA), Gestalt psychotherapy, psychodynamic orientations, cognitive-behavioural therapy and coaching, existential/humanistic orientations, psycho-social training, positive psychology.
Students will be taught to 1/ critically evaluate the application of methods and techniques, 2/ reflect on the efficacy and usefulness of the application of techniques in relation to the task and goals of working with the client/clients within a given context and department, 3/ critically evaluate the development potential of the methods and techniques in relation to the context of their use in working with clients in different work contexts, i.e. psychotherapy, counselling, coaching, psycho-social training, educational counselling, family therapy, social rehabilitation, developmental work with work teams, in supervision in work with helping professionals, etc. Gained knowledge: Students will gain an understanding of the different uses of methods and techniques across the spectrum of helping and development professions in clinical, counseling, and organizational settings. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of ethical considerations in the application of methods and techniques to work with individuals or groups, and will know the limits and risks of inappropriate use of methods and techniques within the context, field of study and desired qualifications. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of taking precautions against harm to the client or work-group. Through demonstration of different ways of working with clients in different professional fields, students will be able to understand and gain insight into the therapeutic, personal development and counselling potential of techniques and methods from a range of psychological orientations.
Students will understand the basic procedures for conducting a psychological interview, and will understand the differences between the psychological interview in diagnostic work (clinical diagnosis, personal assessment, personal psychology) and the psychological interview about a client's personal issues in a therapeutic/counseling interaction or when working on a client's personal developmental goal.
Students will understand the differences between the use of techniques and methods for psychotherapy, coaching, counseling, mentoring, mediation, personal-social training, soft skills training, including team development methods and games for facilitating collaboration and quality of relationships in the workplace, etc. Gained skills: Students will be able to identify the core techniques and methods of a particular school of psychology, will be able to ask key questions about the effectiveness, appropriateness and adequacy of a particular method and technique within the current trend of interdisciplinary use of methods across sectors of the helping professions, and will be encouraged to reflect critically and academically on current trends in the areas of developing methods and emerging schools and practices, including their own lifelong learning within their future profession. |
