Annotation -
In terms of content, the course is practically oriented in terms of research and is mainly related to the course of psychological methodology. Its purpose is to stimulate students to acquire or develop the skills (e.g. systematicity, diligence, consistency, perseverance, resourcefulness and creativity) needed for empirical work of a research nature.
The aim of the course is to gain initial practical experience, knowledge and skills in psychological research in a selected area of psychological phenomena.
Knowledge gained: The student is familiar with research methods, theories, research findings and practical applications; distinguishes between types of research (experimental, "non-experimental", heuristic, validation, critical, exploratory, descriptive, field, quasi-experimental, clinical, case study, correlational, qualitative, action); has a good knowledge of research methodology (research procedure, research conditions, research sets, research methods, workflow); has a deeper knowledge of descriptive statistics and demonstrates a basic orientation in the use of multivariate statistical methods and their computer outputs (correlation and regression analysis, analysis of variance, factor analysis); is oriented in the procedures of qualitative methodology; is familiar with grant policy and the possibilities of obtaining scientific grants in the Czech Republic and the EU.
Skills acquired: The student can identify the differences between qualitative and quantitative methodologies, recommend appropriate approaches in relation to the identified phenomena, research objectives and expected outcomes; can prepare a research design, define research questions, find relevant methods for data collection to verify them and find statistical procedures to process them; master the procedures of descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing, can interpret results; is able to prepare a field psychological research on a selected educational phenomenon; is able to conceptualize the phenomenon under study using a concept map - diagram; is able to search for disputes and conduct a professional discussion while studying the literature (including the use of electronic resources from psychological literature databases); is able to subordinate data collection to the needs arising from specific tasks; In his/her own literary work, he/she can integrate everything into an analytical narrative with formal correctness of the text; is able to participate in the solution of a research task in a team, from theorizing, to creating a research design, to collecting data, to processing and interpreting it, to creating a research report; is able to consider the ethical implications of research work.
Content of the course: the area and type of psychological phenomena included in the research (e.g. norm-pathology; humans, animals, artificial systems; motivation, emotions, cognition, conation) and the prevailing type or degree of combination of approaches to research (e.g. nomothetic vs. idiographic approach; clinical in pathology; qualitative and quantitative) are characterized by a deliberate variety - an offer for students, associated with the work of the respective researcher - a member of the department. The latter will also recommend relevant literature related to the topic under study.

Course completion requirements -

In this course, students should participate in at least three different psychological research projects sponsored or approved by a member of the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, within the scope of 1 hour per week (i.e. 26 hours over two semesters). The research can also be done in block form and in groups. Students keep a record of their participation in research on a special form. Research supervisors will confirm the extent of the student's research experience hours on this form with their signature. The attestation is then recorded by the teacher of the course on the basis of this form of research activities.
