Annotation -
This course explores the fascinating intersection of the sounds of language and society. We will investigate how sound patterns of English vary within and across speech communities, and how these variations carry social meaning, indexing identity, group affiliation, and social attitudes. The course is designed to be accessible to students with diverse study backgrounds. We will emphasize conceptual understanding and practical application of basic tools of phonetic analysis. The seminars are therefore dedicated to auditory and acoustic analyses of selected speech samples.
The course is taught in English.
