Annotation -
In the theoretical part, students learn about the basic principles of acoustics which are important for phonetics, about the
fundamentals of psychoacoustics, and about the source-filter theory of speech production. In the seminars, the covered
phenomena will be practiced in the form of exercises. Students will acquire essential operations with software tools for the
analysis of speech signals (e.g., generating sounds, filtering, segmenting the speech signal.

1. Physical description of sound: basic notions; propagation of sound; the principle of Fourier transform, spectrum and spectrogram; waveform types; resonance and filters.
2. Psychoacoustic description of sound: frequency vs. pitch; intensity vs. loudness; quality of sound.
3. Gunnar Fant's source-filter theory of speech production.
