This course introduces students to medieval history through key topics. Both sections address topics shaping historical research on medieval Europe, specifically (1) the study of religion and the church and (2) issues of social structure and economics. The individual lectures do not aim to provide a complete overview of the historical facts, but rather to characterize the relevant research field, provide an account of the issues currently under research, and present several case studies or model source analyses. The course is intended to complement the courses in existing disciplines and to provide a coherent context for the study of specialised topics and aspects. Religion and Church 1. Christianization 2. Church structure 3. The Papacy and Councils 4. Monasticism and religious life 5. Cult, liturgy, piety 6. Reform and heresy 7.
