English

The course is a loose continuation of the meetings on the sociology and philosophy of science that have been
held at FLU over the last three years. However, while these meetings were mainly devoted to physics, the focus of
this new edition of the seminar will be on mathematics. Indeed, it is useful to recall that the original, David Bloor's
‘strong program’ of the sociology of science, on which the whole later tradition of the discipline would be based,
was empirically grounded precisely in mathematics. In the following decades, however, mathematics didn’t
manage to maintain its position as a strategic research site. Why? By studying representative texts in the
sociology of mathematics, we will attempt to formulate first hypotheses with the help of which this disciplinary
dynamic could be explained.

Seminář volně navazuje na setkání nad sociologií a filosofií fyziky, která na půdě FLÚ probíhala v posledních třech
letech. Ta byla věnována především období největšího rozkvětu sociologie vědy a vědeckého poznání v 70.-90.
letech 20. století, ale také pozdějším reformulacím jejího badatelského programu po tzv. vědeckých válkách. Fyzika
se pro „novou“ sociologii vědy stala privilegovaným výzkumným terénem s ohledem na své postavení v oblasti
filosofie vědy, jíž chtěla sociologie v určitém ohledu konkurovat. K fyzice však sociologie tíhla také ve snaze
předvést své možnosti v pro ni a priori nehostinném prostředí. Stejná intence ji přitom nejprve přivedla k ještě
složitějšímu případu, kterým je matematika, a právě k ní obrátíme pozornost letos. Tzv. „silný program“ sociologie
vědy, o který se celá pozdější tradice sociologie vědeckého poznání (Sociology of Scientific Knowledge, SSK) bude
opírat, formuloval David Bloor v knize Knowledge and Social Imagery (1976) empiricky ukotvené právě v
matematice. V následujících desetiletích si však matematika postavení strategického výzkumného místa rozhodně
neudržela. Proč? Na základě studia reprezentativních textů ze sociologie matematiky se pokusíme o formulaci
prvních hypotéz, s jejichž pomocí by bylo možné tuto oborovou dynamiku vysvětlit.

Seminář je koncipován jako badatelský, studenti a studentky jsou vítáni. 

 

Místo konání: Zasedací místnost Kabinetu pro studium vědy, techniky a společnosti (214a), Filosofický ústav AV ČR, Jilská 1, Praha 1, 2. patro.

 

Čas konání: První setkání semináře se uskuteční ve čtvrtek 20. 2. 2025 od 14:30 do cca 16:00 hod. (začátek semináře je načasován tak, aby se studenti a studentky FF stihli přemístit do Jilské ul.).

Poznámka k 1. a 8. květnu: Účast na semináři není povinná.
